Next to the cable inlet duct is a small bare alcove with no markings or indication as to its use. It was, in fact, used as a small storeroom for items such as smoke detectors and the maintenance electricians also used it as a workshop for minor repair work.
Looking back at this chamber from the main blast doors gives an idea of the scale involved. One of the blast doors can just be seen at the edge of this photograph. The material on the floor is part of the ceiling cladding which is falling down in many parts of the bunker. In some places pieces several feet across have fallen and more is loose. A hard-hat is a very useful piece of protection from here on.
