9o. Emergency Exit Blockhouse

Above is the final stage of the staircase to the emergency exit. The air intake canopy is also evident but both these features are partially obscured by the brickwork that now seals them against unwanted intruders. From the outside the structure is a blockhouse protecting the shaft. The steel door gives access from the stairs to the surface and the canopy allowed air to be taken in without rain etc being a problem.

Inside this, at the top of the stairs, can be seen the doorway. The repairs to the brickwork, damaged when the bunker was broken into, can be clearly seen. This brickwork, combined with the outside steel door, are designed to keep casual intruders out.
