7. Inside the Bungalow

Once the steel doors are open, access is available to the main staircase. Normally, only heavy equipment would have been brought through these doors, people would have entered through the front door of the bungalow and arrived here via the guardroom.

An alternative for smaller items would have been the shuttered entrance just visible on the wall on the right of the above photograph. The barrier is a complete mystery at the moment. No-one interviewed so far can remember it being there nor has anyone suggested a use for it. The covers on the wall are steel plates fixed solidly to the brickwork so the original finish is obscured.

Once inside the equipment entrance doors, the sliding steel shutter can be seen on the right-hand wall. This hung from wheels running on a substantial steel guide. The base is held securely in position against the wall by brackets and wheels on another guide. Steel wires were in place for opening and closing the shutter but the original locking mechanism is not evident. It is now firmly jammed and will no longer slide.

From this entrance a staircase leads down to the main entry corridor.
